Sectionals @ Schaumburg
I’ve been getting some guff about not putting up an entry for this race. ;)
I think those who read this page know me well enough to understand that I live and breathe cross country. From June until November, it’s on my mind and in my dreams 24/7. And from November back to June? Well, I let myself be distracted by Track, but I keep dreaming of what will come.
What does this have to do with Sectionals? Well, I don’t like the season to end. Plain and simple. That being said, there were some great highlights from the race:
Bailey went out strong and put herself in a great position to race. She finished in a solid time of 18:56, just 13 stinkin’ seconds short of making the season last one more week. I could not be prouder of her performance--she ran with guts and caught that spindly little girl from an unnamed school ;)
Taylor ran second for us and nearly beat her lifetime PR. Considering this course is a “real” 3-miles (compared to ours), I think her time of 20:26 should count as a lifetime PR. :) She ran a great race that capped off a tremendous senior year.
Alexis ran third for us, coming out of nowhere to run a huge PR of 20:44. Not only was she focused and calm during the race, but we finally got her to talk during the week leading up to Sectionals. I look forward to seeing what she will do during track and next xc season as returning Varsity runner.
Despite some nagging leg problems, Ally ran a solid race, coming in 4th for us. Although she was short of a PR, she ran inspired and focused, especially compared to her Regional race. She and Alexis will be back next fall to pull my hair and sing ridiculous songs in the back of the Spirit Bus. :)
After sitting out a week to try to let her achilles recover a bit, Joseline was back to round out our scoring team. Although I know she was not happy about her time, she gained valuable racing experience that will help her when she returns as an upperclasswoman next fall. ;)
Ana was our 6th bee, and had a much more solid race this week compared with Regionals. She also learned a thing or two about Schaumburg that will serve her well next fall as a returning Varsity racer (along with her other freshie sisters).
Last, but certainly not least, Madison rounded out our seven for the day. Madison’s race shows that times do not reflect the whole story. After battling Strep for several weeks, Madison put on a strong face and raced with courage for our team. From a solid frosh/soph racer, Madison evolved into a true Varsity racer this fall. Her newfound understanding of racing will be exciting to watch on the track in the spring.
Overall, I could not be more impressed with the way this team came together this fall. From the outstanding support (Fatima, Kelsey, Bug, Kayla, and dare I say Kaley?) at Sectionals to the funny stories we accumulated all season, I certainly will never forget this team. I’m proud of every one of you! :)
